Hennessy established the VSOP classification of superiority. Already recognized for its excellence, the house received an order from the Royal Court of England to blend a "Very Superior Old Pale“ cognac. In 19th century England the term “Old Pale” referred to a light colored yet old Eaux-de-vie with less wood influence. The term VSOP became an official cognac classification.
